In hospitals and clinics this work is the core of the healthcare technology management (HTM) function.

Preventive maintenance is not just good practice; it is tied to accreditation. Joint Commission's environment-of-care standards require facilities to maintain a medical equipment inventory and follow defined maintenance activities and frequencies, and CMS conditions of participation similarly expect equipment to be maintained in safe operating condition. Calibration of biomedical equipment to manufacturer specification

Biomedical Calibration

Calibration verifies that a device's measurements and outputs match a known reference within stated tolerances — an infusion pump delivering the volume it displays, a monitor reading pressures accurately, an electrosurgical unit producing the power it is set to. When a device drifts out of specification, calibration brings it back or flags it for repair.

Electrical safety inspection is a companion task: measuring leakage current and verifying grounding so that a device does not present a shock hazard to patient or staff. AAMI publishes widely used guidance on electrical safety and equipment management, and this testing is generally performed on a defined schedule with results documented for the equipment record.

Medical Imaging Service

Imaging systems — radiographic and fluoroscopic X-ray, ultrasound, CT, and mammography — combine complex hardware with radiation-producing components, so their service carries both uptime and safety stakes. Imaging equipment that produces radiation is also regulated. Isolated Power Testing

Isolated power systems (IPS) are used in certain wet procedure locations — most commonly operating rooms — to reduce the risk of shock and to keep power available even in the event of a single ground fault. A line isolation monitor (LIM) continuously watches the system and alarms if leakage current rises toward a hazardous threshold.

NFPA 99, the Health Care Facilities Code, addresses the design and testing of these systems, and facilities generally verify LIM function and system performance on a periodic basis. Because the alarm is the safety mechanism, routine testing that confirms the monitor actually trips at the correct threshold is central to the work. Specific test intervals and thresholds should be confirmed against the current edition of NFPA 99 and the manufacturer's instructions.

Hemodialysis depends on both the dialysis machines and the water treatment system that feeds them. Because a patient's blood is exposed to large volumes of dialysate derived from that water, water quality is a safety-critical concern, and the supporting equipment — pretreatment, reverse osmosis, and distribution — must be maintained alongside the machines themselves.
